Free-For-Service Health Insurance

Free-for-service heal insurance is considered the more traditional form of health coverage in the United States. It used to be the most widespread form of insurance for many years. It is characterized with monthly payment of premiums that policyholders make in order to take advantage of medical services.

When you are insured under this method you have the freedom to choose your own doctor, specialist, hospital or health care provider.  You can go to the one preferred and receive the service. The insurance company has no say whether the visit to the doctor was necessary. This is true to a certain extent. You might be required to get clearance from the insurance company if you need to go to the emergency room and you are not incapacitated.

There are different types of payment methods involved. The most common one is deductibles. You will be required to cover part of the medical treatment of about 2,000 to 2,500 before the insurance covers the rest. This deductible will in most cases be around 20% of the bill. Other types are when you need to cover the whole bill and then you apply for reimbursement or where the service provider directly contacts the insurance company and receives their money from them.

Another detail you must be aware of is that insurance companies cover only for reasonable and customary services and expenses. This means that if the specialist you visited charges significantly more than most other of his kind in the area, you might be required to pay the difference yourself. Also, some procedures and practices such as annual check-ups and pelvic exams are not included in the coverage. Companies have rethought their position on those as research has revealed that preventive care can decrease medical expenses in the longer run.

Free-for-service insurance offers good flexibility when it comes to choosing your preferred specialist. However, it comes at a higher monthly price and out-of-pocket expenses compared to more modern other methods of health insurance coverage.
